DISCWORLD FIGURES

All my figures and buildings are built to a nominal scale of 30mm to 6'. This is because this is the closest standard for both the Clarecraft (who didn't quote a scale) and the Games Workshop figures which I have used for the bulk of my models. Games Workshop originally made the traditional 25mm scale wargaming figures but over the past 5-10 years their figures have grown. Black Tree Design Miniatures, who produce similar style figures to Games Workshop, (they originally had a number of ex-Workshop people working for them) have been known to advertise their figures as being 28mm scale.

Clarecraft

Clarecraft were the only commercial manufacturer of Discworld figures in this scale that I have come accross.

It was a range of 39 pewter miniatures. They are comparable to other commercially available figures of a scale of approximate 25/30mm. and as such make excellent playing pieces for role-playing games i.e. GURPS Discworld and for use in fantasy wargames i.e. Games Workshop Warhammer or Mordheim.

The figures are fairly well detailed for the scale but the majority of the poses are basic standing figures with their arms moulded by their sides, making them a little lifeless and conversions of them a complicated task. Also they may not be of a constant scale. There are two DEATHs and one is noticeable shorter than the other but otherwise any scale differences are negligible.

I believe they sold for about UK£3.00 but can now only be found on Ebay where they can be sold as collectors items at up to UK£20.00 each but if you wait some are sold at resonable prices. I bought some in early 2008 for just over £1 each. I would recommend that you purchase the plain unpolished versions if you can as the process of polishing tends to remove some of the finer detailing.

Some of the figures are based on the excellent Paul Kidby drawings. The other are either direct copies or are in the style of Clarecraft's large figure range,

Clarecraft's picture of each figure is on the character's page, linked to from the various groups on the Discworld in Miniature page. You may also find a picture of my own painted version(s) and other details on the character.

The models issued were:-

Rincewind DMP01 height 35mm

A reasonably detailed figure complete with "wizzard" hat but no life to it. Just how Rincewind would like to be!

Twoflowers DMP02 height 33mm

I like this figure. Ready to use his iconogragh and with a grin that should be given to his subject. He's fun to paint especially if you give him brightly coloured holiday clothes.

The Librarian DMP03 height 40mm

Another well detailed figure. Posed as if he was about to jump into the air and is waving his arms in the air like monk** sorry apes do.

The Luggage DMP04 height 18mm

This is The Luggage.

DEATH DMP05 height 40mm

Death with scythe and hourglass. A good figure let down by the scythe which for some reason has a flat rather than round shaft. The scythe is easily bend.

Granny Weatherwax DMP06 height 45mm

Just as I imagine her, complete with hat pins in her pointy hat.

Carrot DMP09 height 40mm

This is a nicely detail figure but in an unusual stance. He is holding his Law book out in front of him as if reading it, but he also has the other arm raised with a clenched fist, as if he was about to punch someone's lights out.

Detritus DMP22 height 42mm

This is one of Clarecrafts earliest pewter figures and is based on their large resin model. His body is therefore rather smooth and un-rock like.

Teppic DMP32 height 29mm

Crouched low with his cape drawn around him and a myriad of weapons concealed upon his person.

Conina DMP34 height 26mm

Kneeling down about to throw a knife.

C.M.O.T. DMP35 height 36mm

Complete with tray of wares-in-abun or two .

Cohen the Barbarian DMP 42 height 30mm

Skinny old man with long beard and short sword. Needs a longer sword!

Captain Vimes DMP50 height 37mm

This figure is based on Paul Kidby drawings although I think the model is a little skinny. The figure is also incorrect for the incident it depicts as he is holding Lord Mountjoy Quickfang Winterforth IV at the ready and dressed in Watch uniform whereas he should be in Sybil's night-dress.

Sergeant Colon DMP51 height 33mm

Colon is standing to attention but I don't think he is fat enough.

Corporal Nobby DMP52 height 30mm

He is holding a morning star similar to the large Clarecraft figure of him. Although skinny, his stance doesn't remind me of a monkey. I do like the character detailing of the head which include zits and fag.

Windle Poons DMP53 height 35mm

The undead version of Windle walking as a zombie with arms held out in front of him.

Mr Ixolite DMP54 height 33mm

Just like the Paul Kidby drawings.

Schleppel DMP55 height 43mm

Comes complete with door to hide behind

Lupine DMP56 height 36mm

His knees are bent so he doesn't tower over others but the legs look wrong some how.

DEATH in the Kitchen DMP57 height 40mm

The rather thick frying pan is compensated for by some well defined cats. This figure is slightly shorter that the other DEATH.

Magrat DMP58 height 34mm

A little thin but otherwise good.

Nanny Ogg DMP59 height 35mm

Carries her flask of scumble.

The Librarian With Tankard DMP60 height 20mm

Just right for sitting outside my model of the Drum.

Quoth on Skull DMP61 height 20mm

This is overscale for my purposes but is an interesting figure and well detailed.

DEATH as the Hogfather DMP62 height 33mm

Cut out of his chair this is the figure I used in my model of the Hogfather.

The Death of Rats DMP63 height 33mm

Like Quoth this is also overscale with the rest of the figures but is worth getting if you like this size of miniature.

Lord Vetinari DMP64 height 30mm

Just what I need to keep the Watch in order. It's a pity that Wuffles was not included.

Errol DMP65 height 21mm

I wish he had been based on the Kidby drawings though. Never mind milliput has work wonders.

Mort DMP66 height 33mm

Mort as boy with a handfull of hourglasses

Albert as a pixie DMP67 height 36mm

With DEATH as the Hogfather I had no excuse not to build a sleigh for use as a Christmas decoration.

Bursar DMP68 height 34mm

Perfect for my UU group.

Ridcully DMP69 height 40mm

My version has a bit more life (and death) - he is ready for hunting.

Greebo DMP70 height 20mm

He looks a little overscale for my purposes but like Errol I expect I will use him as he will be better than anything I can model from scratch.

Agnes Nitt DMP71 height 32mm

Plump but not plump enough.

Foul Old Ron DMP72 height 32mm

Gaspode's head is totally different from the dog model I have already used. Do I remove the dog from this figure or create a new Gaspode.

Casaunda DMP73 height 32mm

Not fat enough for a dwarf!

Imp-y DMP74 height 32mm

Not sure about the shape of the Guitar.

Glod DMP75 height 27mm

Not fat enough for a dwarf!!

Lias Bluestone with drums DMP76 height 55mm

He looks a little to much like a converted Detritus.

Heights include bases of approx 5mm

Other Figures

For those of you who wish to expand your collections there are a number of miniature manufacturers like Games Workshop who produce comparable sized figures of dwarfs, humans, wolf etc. that can be used to represent the other Discworld characters.

Discriptions of most of the characters in the books are very limited and the official images of Discworld characters produced by Clarecraft, the two K's, (Kidby & Kirby) and Cosgrove Hall are all very different. At one of the Discworld Conventions Paul Kidby explained how his first drawings of Doughnut Jimmy as a thin man had to be changed to the fatter version as this was more as PTerry imagined him. Also everyone I know who has read the books also has a slightly different idea of what the characters should look like.

littlebottom There may be a "CORRECT" way for a character to look but my advice is to either look for figures that are like the illustrations or ones that can be made to resemble what YOU imagine them to be as you are reading the books. i.e. take a normal Dwarf who looks a little effeminate, add high heels to the hobnailed boots and a small wooden box with holes for livestock transportation and it becomes Littlebottom.

My own version of Littlebottom was made before I saw Paul's picture. Although I consider the Kidby drawings to be the definitive versions of the characters, I will not be altering my model, as to me it is still more how I see Littlebottom when reading the books than Paul's drawing is.

If you have any suggestions or ideas on figures that could represent Discworld characters etc. please contact JAK at ufo@(REMOVE)area51b.freeserve.co.uk delete (REMOVE) before using email
