Austin Healey
Mk I (frog-eye) Sprite
|
|
This car is not really a MG but if you look back
at all the important MG's in history they were in
the main only basic family cars with body and mechanical
improvements. The relationship between the Sprite
and Midget was no different. MG took the new body
shaped Mark II Sprite, improved and modified it
by adding MG badges and then sold more cars than
Austin Healey at a more expensive price. This
car is the fore runner of these MGs.

The model is based on the Airfix kit
and is built as per the instructions. The chassis
and power is from a Reprotec Seat 600E which has the
correct wheelbase and, unlike the Scalextric Mini
chassis which is usually used to motorise this kit,
also has a realistic axle width. The Seat's wheels
are retained but I removed the hub caps fitted and
replaced them with the ones from the kit. These were
then covered with "bare-metal" foil, you
can just make out the AH in the centre on the bottom
picture. The yellow Reprotec guide has been replaced
with a black Scalextric one. |

I was trying to make the car as near to straight
off the production line as I could but I haven't
been able to find a secure method of keeping the
front bumper on. The driver is cast in resin from
the one in the Airfix Beach Buggy kit. He and casts
of the seat backs are fixed onto a cockpit plate
mounted level with the bottom of the dash board.
Number plates will be added when the front bumper
problem is solved.
