MGB

This is based on the Airfix kit. A Scalextric F*!d Escort chassis was to be used even though the wheel base was wrong but being my first attempt at a conversion I never plucked up courage to cut it. Needing larger wheels and tyres a visit to the local Scalextric dealer lead me to believe that F1 type rear wheels were my only option. Knowing that the Porsche 911 also used these sized tyres I waited until I could obtain such a car. When I did I was pleased to find that the Porsche's wheel base was just right for the B. Minor modifications were made to the chassis to allow the body to clip on.

Not liking the F1 type wheels I came across the wheels on the model in a spares pack and although they are a little smaller than I would have liked I thought they looked like a set of alloys a boy racer would buy for this type of car. I have since been told that the wheels come from the Ferrari F10 (A boy racer with little taste then!).

The driver figure from the Escort was used with a full tonneau cover over the passenger side. Rather than risk damage to the kits windscreen a folded flat "Brooklands" type screen was fitted for the driver.

The axles still need to be trimmed a little as the wheels stick out too much particularly at the back where the tyres are not standard for the wheels and are a mm or 2 wider than the those at the front. I made the tyre change as I found it handled better with this combination.

The paint work is based on a number of MGB works cars from the 1960's. I don't like the windscreen and will replace at some time with a more accurate looking one.

The car is now undergoing some modifications using the minilite wheels and Brooklands screen from a Caterham 7. The pictures will be revised when the project is finished.

Traffic have just released their own resin version of the MGB. So if you're fed up of the ridiculous prices some people are asking for airfix kits on EBay and don't want the problems of cutting a chassis to fit, try this model. Their model can also be built as a 1960s Police Patrol car (with siren). Click on image for more info)

Future releases : - M.G.C. roadster,
M.G.B. Hardtop (racing version)
M.G.B. “droop-snout nose” Le Mans 1965 DRX 255 C (competition no. 39).

When you contact them - Please tell them you saw the car on this site.
