MG Maestro - Buzby

This car started as a well used shell. I did intend to make it into a van, and as BT used Maestros it was natural to use the Buzby image. I had great difficulty finding information on the van, and never found out its correct wheelbase. I had recently obtained a cheap Fly C5 Corvette so it was decided to make the model to fit this chassis.

Various custom conversion plans were made. Having cut the door pillars to remove the roof and the body sides to lengthen it I realised that this was not going to be an easy project. A roof chop is not straight forward what with matching up pillars, widening the roof etc. Around this time I saw a picture of a Pickup converted from a Golf and so the option to follow this example was taken. The wheel arches were cut from a crushed "VW Beetle" and the rear spoiler and rear lights from a Merc.

The spaces between the cut body parts were filled with pieces of plastic card and modelling filler used to fill gaps and smooth the surface. The curved sides were difficult to get right so the decals were expanded to cover the imperfections in this area.

Therefore the planned decals went from a single Buzby on the van panels to Buzby every where with the MG Logo also thrown in. My first designs using the MG logo had it on an angle as used on X-Power cars but because of the pixel problems I found they looked better upright

The interior uses cast seat backs and dashboard. The driver is an old Scalextric body with short arms and a cast resin head. I did want something better but once I realised that I couldn't have someone with their elbow resting on the door, plain and simple won though. A transparent plastic sheet forms the window.

The Fly chassis caused problems with its sloppy independent front axles but once they were cured it works well. It had to be cut down widthways to fit and then the side pipes, extended Lotus 7 ones, and the Jag IRS, cast from an Airfix kit, were fitted to complete.

While working on the chassis I made some brake discs to fit on the wheel hubs.

Having made this a modern conversion with the X-Power type decals I dropped the intended 3.5 V8 power unit and went for the 5 litre one from the SV-R.

I suppose I should then have gone for ventilated discs but I couldn't face drilling all those tiny holes.
