The New Bug 1999

The New Beetle was developed as a concept car during 1994 and launched in 1997.

This Model is based on the Scalextric racing version. The car is more or less stock except that the rear wing has been cut off.

The main problem was that the car was covered in sponsor's logos. Those on the body work came off easily with T-Cut car paint restorer. The ones on the windscreen gave a few problems but I eventually removed them by scraping them off with my thumb nail without marking the screen. I then polished the screen with a soft cloth and touched up the black painted window frames. The result was plain window glass suitable for a road car.
Once cleaned up the car body only needed a few finishing touches with a paint brush, side lights, black on the mirrors to finish it off.

The interior was repainted in a duo grey scheme I found in a magazine article and the racing driver was replaced by the passenger from the Cabriolet, with the original driver's arms.

A small paper flower has been fitted into the vase just to the right of the speedometer.

The car is now on a Cabriolet chassis as this model has the correct road wheels for a standard Beetle in the UK. Although Scalextric list the wheels as spare parts they are impossible to obtain. Even an enquiry direct to the factory drew a blank. Their reply was that they don't make Beetles any more. This was in January!!!!
Forward to the 2000's
