Design Notes

DEATH

7 foot tall skeleton of polished yellow bone. Eye sockets with tiny points of light usually blue. Robe of absolute darkness, sometimes with a riding cloak fastened with a silver broach bearing his personal monogram the Infinite Omega. Scythe looks normal but blade so thin you can see through it - a pale blue shimmer. Heavy waist belt with his second favorite weapon a white bone handled, with tasteless skull and bone decoration, sword which has same type of blue blade as scythe. A rather fine pipe and large leather bag of copper coins now blue/green with age. Many think of Death as uncaring but he saved Ysabell who became his adopted daughter, married Mort and had his grandaughter, Susan.

Death can be summoned by the Rite of AshkEnte, which requires either

a) eight eighth-level wizards, a ceremonial octogram, rams' skulls, and dribbly candles
b) three small bits of wood and 2cc of mouse blood, or
c) two small bits of wood and a fresh egg.

He likes cats, and curry, though it is unnecessary for him to eat. He has created a house and garden, which contain structures that imitate human ones - a furnished bedroom and bathroom, for instance, though he has no need of either; it just seems to him that a proper house ought to have them. The house is bigger inside than out, and fixed distances seem to be strictly optional there

Hogfather

Death was red robed, the hood hid a lot of his face. Red gloves, boots, pillow under red and white suit. Long white false beard with hooks for ears, held on with string. Present list in pocket. also the turnips, porkpies etc left for him.

Gouger, Tusker, Rooter and Snouter. 4 large boars, huge and grey and bristly with small red eyes, pointed ears and tusks. Rings through their noses. Harnessed to a sledge built of crudely sawn tree trunks laid on two massive runners. It looked ancient and there were nasty crude grinning faces that looked out of place. Pile of sacks in the back with top of teddy bear peeping out, brightly coloured uniformed soldier, a drum and red and white candy cane. Kids letters written in crayon on pastel coloured paper with bunnies and teddies on. Albert as oldest most unplesant pixie with jolly green hat with a bell, askew pixie costume and soggy thin cigarette end. Screw top bottle of tea.

Snowman - Three balls of snowpiled on top of one another, black dots for the eyes and a semi-circle of dots for the mouth with a carrot for the nose. What looked like two twigsfor arms, one holding a curved stick. The raven, with a damp piece of red paper on its breast landed on one arm. The snow broke off in chunks revealing a gaunt figure in a flapping black robe, DEATH spat out the carrot and scythe blade flashed into lifr with a click when touched.

Model of Hogfather It may take a little time to open due to size of pictures

The real Hogfather
  1. Naked except for an animal skin loin cloth. Long hair woven into a thick plait down his back. Tattoed with blue whirls and spirals haunting his body. Some wounds bandaged by strips of Susan's petticoat.
  2. Dressed in heavy furs with fur hood and boots, stone tipped spear and looking stronger. A white hare sprang passed the body.
  3. Older, same eyes but with thick white robes like a priest.
  4. He had put on weight and it was impossible to see anything other than a huge red robed man. Ice crystals settled here and there on cloth, hint of hair or tusks in the sparkle of the frost. He had left the false beard in the sledge.

Bill Door

Death on holiday. Old overalls and broad rimmed straw hat.

Binky

Binky is Death's horse. He is a real flesh and blood horse, chosen after Death had several disasters trying to use skeletal horses and fiery steeds that is they kept falling apart or setting fire to the stables. Binky is bright white in colour and can fly through the sky and cross the dimensional barriers between Deaths domain and the Discworld. A fine stock animal with huge white flanks and crimson eyes. Silver and black harness and ornate silver saddle. Behind the saddle is a scabbard for a folding scythe and a saddle bag for the riding cloak (also used by Mort). He leaves no footprints but sometimes leaves glowing prints in the air and can cause sparks on cobbles.

Motorbike

Black and silver, made of shiny tin and tinsel and wire, 2 small spoked cart wheels, bone, tree branches and mirrors. Horse's skull over front wheel. Feathers and beads hung from ever point. Blue corona all round it. Left rose petals, feathers, smoke and sparks in its wake. (picture 22/3/2000)

(from Clarecraft model) Engine made of books, uses Binky's saddle. Studded leather straps on petrol tank.

Death wears the Dean's quilted leather jacket with 'Born to Rune' on back.

Albert /Alberto Malich the Wise

The Founder of Unseen University 1222-89. In real years 67 but has been alive for past 2000 disc years as Death's Manservant.

Small hunched old man, stick thin. Red hooked nose which drips. Half moon spectacles, smiles a lot. scarf. frys eggs and bacon.

as Wizard (M p213)

Ysabell

Deaths adopted daughter, later Mort's wife. 16 years old, suggestion of too many chocolates. Fixation for pink. Mort's height. Pearl sheen to red rimmed silver eyes, pale face, eyebrows like mating caterpillars, silver hair. Impractical 'Pre-Raphaelite style long dress. does needle work. (picture 20/12/2000)

Mort

Tall red-haired and freckled. Thin white face, brown eyes. Sort of body that appears to be build out of knees, bandy legs and only marginally under its owner's control. Neat fitting black robe with faint silver embroidery.

Married Ysabell and became Duke of Sto Helit.

Paul Kidby gives him an Elizabethan appearance because Terry specified that Mort should wear pantaloons.

Susan Sto Helit

Daughter of Mort and Ysabell, therefore a Duchess, granddaughter (adopted) of Death. She has inherited much of Death's abilities, she is very good at games that involve swinging sticks, and can become invisible to non-magical minds.

As far as looks were concerned, Susan had always put people in mind of a dandelion on the point of telling the time.

Attractive in a skinny sort of way. Her hair, which is pure white apart from a black streak, was unmanageable until 17 years old, now it manages itself rearranging into new styles to suit the occasion. Has a birthmark of three pale lines which appear on her cheek when she blushes (not often) or is angry. Worked with Death of Rats and Quoth the Raven on occasions.

When grown up, and parents dead, became a governess for Mrs Gaitor who aspired to the Upper Classes. Two children Twyla and Gawain, who could walk. both had dark hair. Mr Gaitor ran a wholesale boot and shoe business.

Susan's hair was often in a prim bun and she had a respectable Governess coat of grey with a grey round dull hat for when out with the children, cloak, small red note book, dress and petticoat.

Can walk through walls. Tone of voice like DEATHs. Has a black robe with lace round the bottom and a stylish hood and a black lace dress of the sort worn by health yet necronerdic young women who want to look consumptive.Keeps a handkerchief in her pocket.

Family motto NON TEMETIS MESSOR

Uses Death's second favorite weapon, the sword when on family business. (picture 23/9/2000)

New Death

Hooded figure with a scythe on a burning skeleton horse. Taller than DEATH with no face or head. Smoke curled in the gap between the top of his robe and a golden crown.
