Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson

Carrot Carrot in Jingo Design Notes

Captain Carrot Ironfoundersson

carrot carrot Converted from the Clarecraft figure. I didn't like his original stance and so have cut off his arms and head and moved them into a more natural position. He is now still reading his book but is now facing to the front. The other arm is now down by his side. This figure, without base is 35mm tall, but as Carrot is 6' 6" he doesn't look out of place with Games Workshop type figures.

Carrot in Jingo

carrot Carrot as in Jingo riding on Evil Brother-in-Law of a Jackal in the white robe of a D'Reg with the white flag furled and attached to a spear. (figure under construction)

This model is based on a 25mm wargaming arab on a camel. The arab's head was removed before the body was fixed to the camel. Carrot's head and sword were carefully removed from a Clarecraft figure with a razor saw and then fixed to the arab body. A hole was drilled through the hand of the arabs right arm and a length of stiff wire used for the spear shaft. The point of a spear from an old figure was cut off and drilled to fit on top of the spear shaft. The white flag is a small piece of tissue paper wrapped round the shaft and a short length of fuse wire was twisted round its top to hold it in place. Milliput was used to fill the gaps and to add tassels to the bottom of the saddle blanket to match those on the head harness.

Modelling stopped when I heard Clarecraft were to make a model of "You Bastard" just in case they decide that camels on the Discworld are slightly different to our own. This camel has a nice set of teeth which makes it look unusual anyway if they don't.

Design Notes

Carrot, so called not because of because of his flame red hair, kept short for reasons of hygiene, but because of his shape - the kind of tapering shape a boy gets through clean living, healthy eating, and good mountain air in huge lungfuls.
A Dwarf by adoption, he was found in the woods as a toddler, wandering near the bodies of his real parents, who had been victims of a bandit attack. Found with him were a sword with a rusty blade and a ring, that was very similar to ones recorded lost from the Royal Jewellery of Ankh. He also has a crown shaped birthmark at the top of his left arm. Coupled with his sword, his charisma, his natural leadership, and his deep and almost embarrassing love of Ankh-Morpork, this rather suggests that he is the long-lost rightful heir to the throne of the city.

As a result of being brought up by Dwarfs he walks with an habitual stoop even though he is 6’6" tall (Shrunk to 6' 3" by time of Thud). His dwarfish name is Kzad-bhat which means Headbanger. He has a big, honest forehead, mighty neck with impressively pink skin due to scrubbing, and 30 inch biceps. When Carrot flexes his muscles, other muscles have to move out of the way first. He has a punch that even trolls have learnt to respect. His eyes are blue.

He was about 16 years old when he first appeared in Ankh-Morpork to join the Night Watch where he wears the normal " uniform " of any old piece of armour he can fit into i.e. leather shirt and trousers with chainmail, breastplate buckled on and a helmet. He polished the breastplate until it gleamed. In MAA he had a crossbow but forgets to release the safety catch.
When promoted to Corporal he had a new jerkin with 2 stripes and a new copper badge. Badge numbers are not mentioned in the books but Clarecraft gave him 191 on their model. In FoC Carrot was the only Captain so it would appear that the old Day Watch captain had retired. (The Day and Night Watch had now merged as one unit. His watchman's cloak is large and heavy and a relic of many nights of rain.

Being very literal minded is a dwarfish trait. It is one that Carrot shares. In the whole of his life (prior to his arriving in Ankh-Morpork) no one ever really lied to him or gave him an instruction that he wasn't meant to take literally. He is given a book of the laws of Ankh - and told that a good watchman learns them all. Therefore he sees it as his duty to learn every law and by-law ever written and recorded.

Carrot keeps track of current events by recording them on paper and attaching to a clipboard. He never was any good at concealment, the harder he tried the more obvious he was.
